On Monday we watched the a video of Hussein Chalayan's 2011 Spring line http://www.vogue.com/videos/hussein-chalayan-spring-2011/ which  premiered on Vogue.com and was part of your reading packet. We also read the article for homework. Hussein Chalayan presented his collection in a way very original format. However, as per the article, designers have options on how they want their line represented.

Attached is a video of Alexander McQueens Show title Weird Science. Please watch the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bCShCcD3N0&feature=related

Question: 1. Based on what you read and watch about Hussein Chalayan and Alexander McQueen, how did each designer use the performance aspect of their shows to highlight the garments and how does this type of presentation compare/differ from the pictorials we see in Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and other top Fashion publications. 2. In addition, the other articles in the packet were also very visual. Describe some of the components from the articles which defined inspiration, space and feel of each.

Please post you comment. Include details the article packet, video details and personal observation to support your thoughts.

P.S. Fashion club, check out these videos and feel free to post.

1.Hussein Chalayan makes everything mistery, his garments are under the spotlight and this is different from the others because is not a simple runway show. He used the guys wearing black to show real movement of the dresses.
Harper Bazaar created a cenarium in the runway, he kind of tells a story.

1) Chalayan: In his show, the models do not show their faces, they are wearing a blanket that covers it, bringing all the atention to the garments. When the blanket is left out, we can notice that the make up is very clean bringing no atention to the model's face and the hair is tied. The light as well is very minimalist and that also highlight the designer's work. The models don’t wear any type of Accessories, which make the clothes the only attraction of his show. In Alexander's show, the models wear a lot of make up and the hair is decorated with braid and buns. The snow brings a white scene which brings the attention to the models. On the second show the model wears a white dress which ends up being the master piece of the show. Both Chalayan's and Alexander's show use very different aspects to call all the attention to their work. They are both very original designers and their work are very conceitual and unusual as their show are always surprise to those who see it,

Alexander McQueen's show is very different from Hussein Chalayan. both are great designers with different views of beauty. McQueen's model get a lot of attention because of the wait he works/plays around with make up and the model's hair. these models have on lots of make up and their hair is mostly braided showing lots of drama. On the other hand, Chalayan's show is very simple but at the same time also attracts attention. for example at the beginning of his show the model with the face cover makes us wonder why she has her face cover and why all the darkness in the show. Chalayan uses no make up or accessories on the models making his garments the only important piece. In addition Chalayan is mostly inspired by history and events that have had a mark in society. He inspires himself to make great new things never done before.

2) The articles are all about how creative fashion can be. For example, Henry says that what really stands out are the easy day-to-night frocks, like the "treasure map" scarf dress emblazoned with grecian patterns and miniature images of castles and volcanos from "mysteriou hidden islands" that buttons up to his signature collar. Fashion designers always have a point of inspiration. For example, the designer Chioma Nnadi, her version for the store combines rich, handcrafted tradition with the fresh and fast-moving trends emerging from New Deehi and Mumbai.
All these designers can see a world that we can't, and they are able to show us with fashion.

1. Both Hussein Chaylan and Alexander McQueen emphasized performance in their shows as opposed to a straight runway show. By doing so, each made their inspirations clear for the collections. It made the show more intriguing and made the viewer understand the designer's purpose of creation. both used movement as a conceptual story. Chaylan put all focus on the garments by pulling the girl's hair back and using minimal makeup. Men dressed in all black moved the dress to show the movement to make it something more than just a dress. It was an allusion to Japanese theatre. When showing his "floating body," Chaylan worked to really emulate the image of a floating body to capture the attention of the audience. Movement brings something new to the collection and adds interest. McQueen used robots, dramatic movement, and spray paintl things one would never see in a typical runway show. The audience is immediately enthralled by this and causes them to focus their attention to see what their role in the show will be. At first, the model is wearing a plain white dress, but what makes it original McQueen is that the spinning model is sprayed with paint by the robots, bringing the title of "Weird Science" through to the audience. To see the paint soak into the dress and drip down brings different elements and the viewer feels more connected, rather than seeing the finsihed product just walk down the runway. Both these designers had specific inspirations that they communicated very well. Pictorals in high fashion magazines are extremely different because a story is formed around the garments. It is a still scene with hair, makeup, accessories, props, and backdrops that let the viewer understand the inspiration, but it cannot bring the feel of movement or performance like these two shows. The performance is what gets the audience interested, not the whole photo spread because that is more typical.
2. Each of the articles in the packet are visual also. Guillaume Henry has a specific inspiration of a French student lost in the corridor of the Louvre. Such specific qualities help to get where the designer is coming from and feel more personal to the clothing. One can actaully picture the scene of what they are thinking with that. He uses inspirations that everyone is familiar with, like Peter Pan, which is relatable. Soigne Kothari took her homeland as a creative tool for boutuique, which is like a passage to India. She does not like the preconceivable notions people have about India and uses this to create her collection into something unexpected and eye-catching. With the intricate patterns and use of Svavorski crystals, people are attracted to the different Indian feel. People can see other parts of the world merely from fashion boutiques like hers.

Hussein Chalayan's show was very different from McQueens. JUst ahving the idea of what he did was very unique from anyone else. Having the model walk out posing like a photo shot was cleevr but when it started spray painting the dress it gave it a interseting look to do something like that. McQueens show was very simple but elelgant at the same time. For each model it was like they had there own story to tell within the setting. When first coming out they had not alot of make-up on and they had their faces coverd which made people focus on the clothing even more.
