Shaping the Way

Suddenly everyone is talking about Thomas Tait, 23, the London-based Central Saint Martins graduate who in October, with barely two collections to his name, won the first-ever Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize. The Montreal-born Tait has yet to sell a single dress outside of private orders (some accessories are available through a project with Asos.com), but he says the prize money will enable him to begin proper production and retail sales. However, it’s his new friends, famous for their taste, who are likely to move his business along the most. Giles Deacon, Daphne Guinness, Stephen Jones and others selected him for the award; another judge, Manolo Blahnik, has been widely quoted gushing over Tait’s ‘‘incredible couture mind.’’
Tait’s approach to tailoring seems to have struck the loudest chord. It can appear simple and minimalist while simultaneously experimenting with volume and structure, sometimes to the extreme. ‘‘I try to approach silhouette differently,’’ he says. One piece from his spring collection, an asymetrical shift dress slit down the side on an angle from the shoulder, is just sort of chic and put together when viewed from head-on. But upon closer examination, the neckline bows out from the upper breast, creating unexpected volume. For Tait, understanding his work means seeing from the side, seeing movement.
‘‘I like the idea of giving something to people who go to the show or the shop,’’ he says, ‘‘people who take the time to really look at the clothes.’’

1. Thomas Tait's designs are fresh and new, specifically their silhouette and shape. Viewers of his show are excited about how "modernistic" it is because it gears away from typical shapes and tries something new. What's so new about his line is that it seems simple and classic from a first look, but when you see the 360 degree view, you notice slits and open sides and angular cuts. It is wearable with a new volumized look, which makes it fresh. The fac that it is his first show and he is a new designer also makes the look new and fresh.
2. When describing his collections, Tait say he wanted to make an approachable collection that is creative so he can use his hands. The audience loved the modernistic aspects. Most of the garments are asymmetrical with vertical slits down the sides, something not commonly seen. Being a new designer, the approach is exciting and fresh.
3. I would describe this look as angular, sharp, creative, simplistic, yet intricate. It is also very voluminous and edgy, but wearable. He really accomplished the wearable couture look with this collection.

1. Tomas Tait's collection is fresh and new mainly because of the odd/edgy shape. For seasons now, we have seen almost the same silhouettes and shapes plastered into every design on the runway with a different twist every time. Tait uses shapes that have never been used before, adding cuts and slits in the most random places. his collection easily stands out from other designers because of his independent style for couture, which again, makes his designs fresh.
2. ‘‘I try to approach silhouette differently,’’ he says. In this quotation, Tait simply sums up the bulk of his collection. From far away, Tait's garments look flat and structured, tailored and chic. From the side, as stated, he explains the hints of volume and movement he adds by creating vertical slits and bowed necklines "creating unexpected volume."
3. When using adjectives to describe Tait's designs, I would say: methodical, simple, systematic, intricate and sharp.

1) Thomas Tait's designs are considered new and fresh cause they can be simple and minimalist but also experiment volume and structure. He approach silhouette at a different way than any other designer does.
2) Thomas is said to be modern, and that he brought a whole new way to do red carpet. Thomas takes risk and that's what other designers should do as well.
3) In my opinion, Thomas Tait's designs are really different from everything else we see on the catwalks. He brings modern, minimalism and structure all together and those three elements turn out to be essencial for making this designer exclusive as he is.

Fresh out of school Thomas Taits's design are making a strong mark in spring 2011 collections. His extravagant silhouette and shapes gave his designs the magic and freshness people were expecting from a new designer who is bringing new ideas and a different way to be classic.
2. Tait describe his collection as his original ideas something that he can say he made by 100% since he sews and cuts the fabric. He likes using his hands to get creative; without planning the color of his garments most of them were black by still very particular. His designs are just out of the close, it was like deconstructing the tuxedo and making it his own.
3. I would describe Tait's work as mysterious/amazing. I love how in an interview where he is ask who would wear his clothes he says "All sorts! And boys too, lets not forget about them! I have to say, though, I like women who have a somewhat aggressive sense of mystery about them. These days, if you manage to intimidate me I’ll probably find you a bit more inspiring." It just proves that his an open minded person who is willing to take any risks in life. the fact that his designs are approachable and wearable couture made him stand out from the others.

1. I think Thomas Taits designs have a classic look to them, yet the symetrical design gives it a different kind of edge and couture in his fashion line. The slits give a completey different apporach to his classic, sophisticated style, making his garments a little more revealing and edgy, which really ties together the look he was going for.
2.The way he described his plan and design for this look was easily shown in the pieces. The article says, "It can appear simple and minimalist while simultaneously experimenting with volume and structure, sometimes to the extreme." You can clearly see the simple deising with the structure in the slits and flaring out skirt, or the jacket with the large shoulders.
3.I would say that Tait's look has a clean-cut, well formed apperance. I can really see many people loving his garments, and see it fitting in a workers lifestyle.

ThomaS TAITS CLOTHING WAS VERY FASHIONABLY NEW. IT WAS DIFFRERNT FROM OTHER DESIGNERS HE USED VERY CALM BUT NEUTRAL COLORS IN HIS COLLECTION. THEY WERE LOOSE BUT TIGHT FITTING LCOTHING TO CERTAIN PARTS OF THE BODY THEY WERE APPEALING TO SOME OF THE OLDER SAFISTACATED WOMEN. tHROUGH HIS COLECTION THERE WERE MANY PARTS THAT WERE ALIKE THAT BROUGHT THE PIECES TOGETHER.
